The shoo-fly pie is a wet-bottom molasses pie that used to sit on the window sills and attract flies, hence the shoo-fly name. It has a gooey bottom, cake-like middle, and crumb topping. Mmmmm good!

We've decided to share our shoo-fly pie recipe as part of an introduction to our on-line Maple Springs Country Farm Cookbook. Click on the link below for the recipe. Shoo-fly pie is a little easier to make than funny cake. But, of course you have to practise the crust a few times to get it to taste like mom's. Most folks serve the shoo-fly for breakfast, but I could eat them any time of the day!
The funny cake is a two layer pie with a chocolate cocoa goo on the bottom and vanilla breakfast cake on top. They call it funny cake because when you put it in the pan, the vanilla part is in the bottom and the chocolate on top. Somehow, in baking, it ends up reversed.
